2015 Pup Shoot Out Final Four Interviews
Sunday February 08, 2015
By: Amy Thomas

The weather may have delayed the start of the 2015 PKC Pup Shot Out at the Isle of Capri Casino in Lula, Mississippi, but in the end, it will end as it always does – with one big winner taking home a new truck! With that being said, the truck is going to go home to one of the following final four handlers and hounds. There is one thing for certain, 2011 was a good time for breeding programs. Each of our Final Four hounds is a model from that year! Now let’s take this time to find out a little more about these gentleman and the winning ’11 hounds that are going to be trying to outperform the others!

Stylish Gabby owned by Pete Olivia and being handled by Tom White first and second round, Nickey Hale in Final.
Stylish Gabby is a 2011 model Walker Female out of Hickory Nut Harry semen and an Insane Jane female owned by Steve Roark. Tom White bought her from Kevin Preumer when she was just a two year old. Tom shared why he decided to get her, “I was looking for a good dog and I trusted Kevin about Gabby being one.”

Last year, Tom ran Gabby for about a month and a half which was all he needed to earn his pup ticket. Then about six months ago, he sold half of her to his friend, Pete Olivia. This year, they have also only run Gabby about a month and a half, to get her a ticket again. However, it was that first ticket that she earned last year that brings her into the spotlight now.
Gabby is at the biggest event of her life so far and she is showing she has what it takes to get the job done in a big way. She is living up to Kevin Preumer’s word that she is a good one. Though the Pup Shoot Out, may have started a day later than usual, Stylish Gabby and Tom White were ready when their first cast was drawn to see if they could advance. They found themselves going up against: Charlie Brown, owned and handled by Bobby Lowe; J & W Ohio River Rose owned and handled by Jesse Jordan; and Mojo’s Hobo owned by Albert Ballard. Charlie Brown and Rose withdrew leaving Gabby and Hobo to see who would win the first go round.
Tom talked about how Gabby performed in that first round, “She looked good. Gabby was on the first tree by herself with a coon. Then she and Hobo made three trees that were circled. She and Rose also treed together and they had a coon.” Gabby rose to the top of that cast with 300 plus points.

In the Late Round, Gabby and Tom drew out with following hounds and handlers: Full Throttle Melt Down, owned by Landreth/Landreth and being handled by Dustin Weed; Soul Sister, owned by Burgamy/Bush and being handled by Tony Burgamy; and Flat Run Pete’s Image, owned by Stallard/Stallard/Stallard and being handled by Casey Stallard. Two dogs withdrew and the other scratched.

Tom recalled how that cast went for him and Gabby, “She and Meltdown treed a coon out of the truck. Then she treed two more coons by herself.” Gabby and Tom won their first round with 375 plus points.

Now Gabby and Tom find themselves in the Final Four and Tom would like to mention some very important people who have helped him get to this place, “I would like to thank my wife Donna, my family, and my hunting partner Nickey Hale for their support. I would also like to mention my Uncle Jack Jones for getting me into coon hunting.”

Tom White has been hunting since he was fifteen years old and first went with his Uncle Jack. That was almost 35 years ago. In that time, Tom’s love for the sport has only grown. His successes in the competition side include winning the Baby Stakes with Smirnoff Ice that he co-owns with his friend Nickey Hale. Noff also brought Tom into the limelight two years ago when the accomplished Walker won the truck for his co-owners. Now Tom is trying to decide if he should handle Gabby in this last, but very important round since he got her here, or if he should let Nickey Hale handle her since his handling skills have already brought home one truck from Lula, Mississippi. We will know by the time they draw out which direction they will be going.

No matter who is handling her, Gabby will be out there giving it her all to try to do what it takes for them to make the right calls. When asked what strengths that she will be brining to this last cast, Tom said, “Gabby is just a good all-around female. She gives you a chance to win it.”

If Gabby brings home the truck, it will be the second one that Tom White has had a chance to be a part of in PKC. It will also be a first for Pete Olivia and a memory that will not be soon forgotten! Good luck gentleman!

Rough Mtn Money Bawls owned by Jimmy Smith and being handled by Justin Steele
Rough Mtn Money Bawls is our second 2011 Treeing Walker in this Final Four. Money Bawls is out of Harry Bawls. Jimmy Smith bought Money Bawls from Trey Perrin after taking him out for a trial, it would not be an experience that Jimmy would forget. He shared, “I bought Money Bawls that night I tried him because he treed four coons. I liked the way he acted.”

Money Bawls was a good investment for Jimmy. So far, he has $600 earned, but that is pale compared to what Money Bawls has the chance to achieve tonight! Now he is sitting in the Final Four of the 2015 PKC Pup Shoot Out and one way or another, he is going to be adding to his resume and bank account!

For the first round, Jimmy Smith found himself in an awkward situation, he drew out with Justin Steele, another local hunter from his area that he had driven to the Isle of Capri Casino with for this trip. While Jimmy handled Rough Mtn Money Bawls, Justin would be handling Brushy Creek Freak for Chris Ergle. Not only would he be going against his co-pilot, but he would have to battle it out against two other top handler and hounds to advance to the late round. Jimmy and Money Bawls found themselves also hunting against Honey Creek Daisy, owned by Griffin/Griffin and handled by Joshua Griffin and Tennessee Primetime, owned and handled by Corey Sexton. It would be an interesting cast and Jimmy almost made a decision that he could have come to really regret.
Justin talked about that early cast, “I talked Jimmy into staying in that early round. He was going to withdraw with 42 minutes still left because Money Bawls was a little over 300 some points down. After he decided to stay in it, Money Bawls treed three singles after that. He had two by himself and one with the other dogs.”

It was after that round that Jimmy told Justin that he was going to be Money Bawl’s new handler for the rest of the night. Justin talked about that, “I had only hunted with Money Bawls those two hours before I hunted him in that late round.”
In their Late Round, Money Bawls and Justin found themselves going up against the following competition: Rocket Man’s Hot Sauce aka Dot owned and handled by Jason Keck; Big Ridge Able, owned by Bob Dudley and being handled by Layne Leverette; and Rambler, owned by Drew Stallard and being handled by Brian Hartrum.

Justin talked about how that cast went, “Fifteen minutes into the hunt, Money Bawls treed a coon by himself about a mile away. That gave him a first and first on it. After that, he just kind of stayed out. At one point while the other dogs were treeing in holes and having some troubles, Money Bawls did come back in and took 225 strike minus. The other handlers would all withdraw their dogs towards the end of the hunt.” Money Bawls won with 150 points and made his way into the Final Four!

Both men who have gotten Money Bawls to this point have been competition coon hunting since the late nineties. However, this is the biggest achievement in the PKC competition coon hunting careers of both Jimmy Smith and Justin Steele. With this moment in the spotlight, they both had people they wanted to mention. Jimmy said, “I want to mention my wife Paige and my daughter Allie. They have always supported me. I also want to mention Chris Hayes, who hunts with me all the time.” Justin shared, “I want to thank my wife Jessica and kids Tyden and Kamden for their support.”

Now the two men are going to see if Money Bawls can finish up what he has started this weekend. When asked what strengths he feels that Money Bawls will be bringing to this Final Four, Justin replied, “He seems to be able to tree a coon at any time. He was treeing coons last night that did not seem like they had been on the ground much. Money Bawls is also good about being by himself.”
Jimmy and Justin rode together to the Isle of Capri in Lula, Mississippi to see what luck they might have there. Now they are hoping that after this last round, they will be riding home solo and trying to decide which one of them will be driving home the new truck! Good luck in this Final Four!

Wipeout Boo Ya owned by Kevin Reese and being handled by Marty Warren.
Wipeout Boo Ya is a 2011 Treeing Walker female out of Zeb 3 and Lone Pine Wild KC. Kevin Reese has owned her since November of 2013. It did not take Boo Ya long to qualify for the truck hunt either, she put the ticket in Kevin’s pocket that next month to get her where she is tonight.

Kevin Reese, who has been competition coon hunting for the past eighteen years, talked about how he came to own Boo Ya, “I was looking for a dog and Jeff Travis and Steve Yant had been keeping an eye out for something that would suit me. Steve Yant was hunting her for a gentleman in Florida. Jeff called me and told me that I should get her bought because she was the kind of dog that I like. He gave me a little insight on her. I called and got her bought through Steve.”

Boo Ya would have a setback though now too long after she qualified for this event. Kevin talked about it, “We had Boo Ya tested for heartworms before we bought her and it was negative. Then she started acting funny and we had her retested. That March after we got her, we ended up finding out that she had the early stages of heart worms. We caught it early and got her treated. She is healthy now and we are just now getting her back rolling.”

And rolling she is, Boo Ya is in the Final Four tonight to see if she can bring home that truck ticket that she got qualified for. The man who has handled her to this place is Marty Warren. Marty talked about how he came to be the one behind her, “I have been hunting her now for about three weeks. Kevin and I are friends and then we are partnered up on a puppy. He asked me a couple months ago if I would like to handle Boo Ya in the truck hunt and I said, ‘Yes’.

Marty is not new to PKC success in the hunts, he has been competition coon hunting since 2001. He talked about some of his past accomplishments, “I was in the Semi-Finals of the World Championship four times with the same dog, Ten High Rusty. My father Richard came up with that name. Then I made the top six of the Super Stakes with Wipeout Wall Street. He was a good one, but died not too long after that. Those outside of this are my biggest accomplishments. I have hunted in a lot of hunts and done well, but never had a great big win. It is a coon hunters dream to be in the Final Four of a big hunt or to win a truck. Those have been my goals. It is hard to get there and takes a lot of hard work and luck.”

This is the first truck hunt that Marty Warren has ever been to. He has been qualified before, but never able to attend due to his work schedule. This year has changed all that and with his first trip to the Isle of Capri Casino, Marty is showing that beginner’s luck is paying off!

To start off their run of big wins for Kevin Reese, Boo Ya and Marty would have to go up against: Full Throttle Psycho, owned by Michael Deaton, and handled by Randy Scaggs; Power Bawls, owned by Blake King and handled by Enoch Cottle; and Mighty Blessed X’s Jr, owned and handled by James McCulloch. Psycho and Power Bawls withdrew and Boo Ya and Marty were up against Mighty Blessed X’s Jr to see who would in. That win would go to Boo Ya and Marty with their 375 plus points.

Marty talked about how that first cast went, “It was good. We scored on four coons. Boo Ya had 200 plus points on the first coon. Then she got 125 plus points on the second coon and 175 plus points on the third coon. I drew 100 minus when I called her treed once when she was not. I drew some great guys and a good judge on this cast. We walked a lot, but had fun.”

For their second cast, Boo Ya and Marty were going to have to go up against the following hounds and handers: Stoney Creek’s Pinky, owned by Cooper/Jennings and being handled by Tom Jennings; Hardwood Panic, owned and handled by Blake Quillen; and Tree Slammin Tuff Nut, owned by David Lunsford and being handled by Tony Walker.

Marty discussed how their late round went, “Obviously it went good for us. Boo Ya treed two coons. She had 100 strike and 100 tree on a coon. We had an hour and forty minutes left to hunt when I cut her loose. She got struck back in, but I had to split the points. I carried that strike for the rest of the hunt. Tuff treed a coon, but lost some points. Those 200 plus points are what did it for the win.”

Now that Marty and Kevin are sitting in the Final Four, they wanted to take this time to mention some important people in their lives. Marty said, “I am blessed to have a good family. My wife Stephanie and children Drew and Allie have put up with me hunting and supported me. I want to thank Kevin Reese for letting me hunt Boo Ya in this. I also want to mention my hunting partners Elmer Jenkins and Ryan Meeks. We all hunt together all the time. Lastly, I am blessed to have great parents. My father is the reason why I enjoy hunting so much. He got me into it as a child and I grew up loving dogs.” Kevin also added, “I would like to thank Marty for hunting Boo Ya in this for me. I want to thank my wife Ashley for coming here with me and supporting me. I am lucky to have a supportive family.”

Now Marty and Kevin are about to find out if Boo Ya has what it takes to win the 2015 PKC Pup Shoot Out. They know that she has some great strengths within her to get the job complete. Marty shared what he feels will give her an edge, “Boo Ya’s biggest strength is that she is good about treeing coons. She likes to compete and hustles around. She typically does not get you in a lot of trouble.”

Boo Ya has overcome a lot of odds to be here tonight holding her own. Now the time has come to see if she can continue and make Marty Warren’s first trip to a PKC Truck Hunt one that he will never forget! Good luck!

Big Money owned by Cable or Danner and being handled by Kevin Cable Jr.
Big Money rounds out our last 2011 Model Walker. He is out of Big D and a Hardwood Patch female named Ring. Kevin Cable Jr. has put in his time with this fine hound. Kevin got Big Money from Kenny Offelid when Big Money was around ten months old. It was not long before the young pup would live up to his name.

Big Money’s earnings started young. Kevin talked about how things have gone for the two of them, “In the Baby Stakes, Big Money got third. Then I placed him in the Final Four of both the Sophomore and Junior Divisions of the Super Stakes. Big Money also won the Ohio State Hunt last year.”

Now Big Money is back at it and his wins at the Isle of Capri Casino have changed Kevin’s luck with this event. Kevin shared, “I have been going to the Truck Hunt for about seven years now and this was the first time I have ever won a cast down here.” It seems that once Kevin broke his streak with Big Money, he would break it in a big way!

To start off his night of heavy competition, Kevin found himself and Big Money going up against the following hounds and handlers: Tiny Bawls owned and handled by Matt Evans; Cassie owned by Sparks/Rigsby and handled by Brad Rigsby; and Vogel’s Stylish Bawlie owned by Richard Vogel and handled by Charles “Sluggo” Payton Jr.

Kevin shared how his first round went, “We turned loose and one dog in the cast treed a coon. Then Bawlie treed a den. The six would end up catching the dog that had treed that first coon. Then Money treed a coon over a mile away. After we scored his tree, we had to walk back to the last place we heard Sluggo’s dog. After we heard it, I recasted Big Money. The female that treed the coon retreed and was called. Money got treed again, but I did not tree him because I had the cast won at that point. She had a den and we won with 175 plus points.”

With his unlucky streak broken, Kevin and Big Money were going to be heading back out for the late round to now give it their all to get to the Final Four. For this cast, they drew out with the following competition: Wipeout 3 Sum owned by Cochran/Prince and handled by Steven Smith; Bud Lite, owned by Marshall/Carvill and handled by Nickey Hale, and W/O Freight Train owned and handled by Kevin King. Big Money got one step closer to the truck with this round’s turn out.

Kevin talked about how this second cast went for him, “To start, Big Money treed a den tree and I turned him back loose. After that, Bud Lite drew some minus. I ended up treeing Money again. He was over a mile again. Steven Smith treed 3 Sum a mile away in the other direction. When we got to Money, he had a den. Nickey treed Bud Lite and leash locked us. Bud Lite was in the ground and circled up. 3 Sum was two miles from where Money had treed and it was a den. I won with 250 circle points.”

Now Kevin Cable Jr. is now in the Final Four and it adds to his successes in PKC. The now 23 year old Kevin started hunting when he was around eight years old. In that time, he has gone from winning big as a youth to now winning big as an adult. He talked about his previous accomplishments, “In 2005, I won the PKC Youth World Championship with my first dog, Coon Dog Jim. Then in 2009, I placed second in the PKC Youth World Championship with Cable’ Sweet Talkin’ Lady. Last year, I won a Pro Hunt and the State Race with Duramax Diesel that I co-own with Larry Danner.”

Larry Danner is also a co-owner on Big Money. Kevin talked about how they became partners “James Tirey had sold Larry a dog and that is how we got to know each other. Then Larry and I got hooked up about six or seven years when he bought half of Lady and we just became partners over the years.”

Now the partners have a chance to bring home the big prize. With this moment of great success, Kevin wanted to mention some of the people who have helped him along the way, “I want to thank my mom and dad for taking care of my other dogs and things when I am gone. If not for them, I could not go far or be gone for very long. I want to thank Larry Danner for being such a good partner. If it were not for him, I would not be able to go to all the hunts I go to.”

The time has come to see if three in a row will be the new streak that Kevin Cable Jr. sets at the Isle of Capri casino. When asked what strengths that Big Money will bring to the Final Four to help achieve that, Kevin said, “He has the wheels and motor to go hunting and find a coon somewhere.”

Big Money’s wheels and motor to tree a coon might be exactly what it takes for Kevin Cable Jr. to be getting another set of wheels and a motor tonight. We are going about to see if they can pull it off! Good luck tonight!

Though the weather had an impact on this year’s 2015 PKC Pup Shoot Out sponsored by PKC, Purina, SportDOG, and the Isle of Capri Casino, it did not stop those qualified from coming to Lula, Mississippi to try to win the new Chevy truck from Lynn Layton Chevrolet in Decatur, Alabama. Though many tried, only four will head out tonight to see which one of them will be driving away in it. There is one things for certain, it will be a 2011 model Walker who rides home in the 2015 Chevy 4x4 truck. Good luck to our Final Four and stay tuned to see which handler and hound will be the one to get behind the wheel!
