2014 PKC Senior Dog Showdown - Final Four Interviews
By Amy Thomas

The time has come to see which of the top four hounds competing for the brand new truck from Mitch Smith Chevrolet will drive it away from the Isle of Capri Casino. The 2014 Senior Showdown sponsored by the Isle of Capri Casino along with PKC Purina and SportDog is about to come to an end and only one hound out of the 64 that headed to Lula Mississippi can take that top spot. Lets meet our Final Four.

Wipeout Maggie
Owned and handled by Mark Hall

Mark Hall and Wipeout Maggie have been having a very successful time here lately. Just last November Mark and Maggie found themselves in the Final Three of the PKC World Championship and Maggie has once again proven that she can hang with the big boys as she is the only female on this Final Four. Mark is about to find out if their lady luck is going to continue and this time pay off big for them.

Mark had some help along the way to get Maggie ready for this event. First off his friend Ronald Gullion who won the Nationals one year with Adios Lightening has been a big support. Mark said that Ronald is his every night hunting partner and helps him keep Maggie tuned up. Last year when Mark ran for his truck ticket in April Ronald went with him and helped drive. Also Marks family has played a very big role in Maggie being up to par for this event. Mark said that he and Maggie had gone to South Carolina a few weeks ago and there Maggie tore her pads up pretty bad. Mark shared that he had to keep her in the house as he nursed her back to health. His wife Kim and kids Landry and Hadley all helped with her treatment and did their part to get her ready for this hunt.

With the support of his family and friends Maggie has been able to make her way to this last cast of the weekend. Entering it Mark and Maggie have a connection to one of the hounds in this Final Four. When Mark got back into hunting he bought this 08 Walker female off of Wipeout Willie from James Baskin. James has sold two of the hounds in this Final Four and he has one in it himself. Mark is happy that one of those hounds that James sold just happens to belong to him. He said that Maggie has just been a joy to own and is part of the Hall family.

After her purchase Mark and Maggie came out of the box going strong and winning big. However Maggie succumbed to some health issues and had a setback. Once recovered though she picked that winning streak back up and showed that she was still a force to be reckoned with. Maggie is once again proving it as she goes out on tonights cast.

Maggie has drawn some good hounds along her way to this last cast. In the Early Round Maggie drew out against Dirty Whiteboy owned by Cochran and Hopkins and being handled by Jonathon Merrit along with Wateree River Supasioux owned by Baker and Catoe and being handled by David Catoe and lastly Mister Overdrive owned by John Malcott and being handled by Robert Beggs. This was a tough cast as all of the hounds walked away with plus points. Maggie and Marks 50 plus point lead would take them into the Late Round. Mark shared that it was a good hunt and Maggie treed two coons for him. She treed her last one with less than a minute in the hunt. Mark shared that Maggie never quits and that in the World Championship last year that she got treed with three minutes left to go. He said that Maggie always keeps trying.

The Late Round found Maggie and Mark going up against Connell’s Thunder Tammy owned by Sarah Register and being handled by Brett Denney along with Huff Hollow Homer owned by Travis and Axford and being handled by Jeff Travis and lastly Ross Insanely Sweet Sugar owned and handled by Greg Ross. It seemed by the scores posted on the internet that it was close between Sugar and Maggie with Maggie winning with 200 plus points over Sugars 150 plus points. Mark stated that it was not as close as it appeared though and that Maggie was up 275 points with 19 minutes left to go. He said that Sugar had to tree two coons to beat Maggie but in the time left Sugar was only able to tree one.

When asked what strengths Maggie was going to bring into this Final Four Mark said that Maggie is just an old coon dog. He said that Maggie trees a lot of coons. In fact he said that so far she has been under five coons in her last two rounds and has no slicks.

This last round has a lot of connections for Mark. First off he is going up against a hound owned by James Baskin who is the person he bought Maggie from. Secondly Mark also went against a Stallard handling in last years PKC World Championship Final Cast. Lastly Mark works for the dealership that sells the truck to PKC. When asked how it works for him if he wins the truck Mark said that it is the same for him as it is for anyone else. The dealership will make the registration out to him like they do any of the PKC hunters who win it.

Now Mark is about to find out if Maggie can pull ahead and win the truck that his dealership has helped make available for this event. Winning the truck would truly be the ultimate pay off for Mark with Mitch Smith Chevrolets involvement with the PKC Truck Hunts. The ride to work on Monday will definitely be a memorable one for everyone at the dealership if Mark and Maggie win this Final Cast.

Stoneys Swamp Rats Son
Owned by Allen Stonecipher
Handled by Eric Henson

Image

This is not the first time that Eric Henson and Stoneys Swamp Rats Son have been in the Final Four of a truck hunt. Last year both Eric and Son travelled to Mississippi to their first ever truck hunt only that time it was the Pup Shootout. On that initial Truck Hunt, Eric and Son found themselves in the Final Four. Some might say it was beginners luck but this year at their second trip to Lula Mississippi they are back at it and now hunting it off in the Final Four of the Senior Showdown.

Stoneys Swamp Rats son is out of Swamp Rat and Hicks Buckcreek Molly who goes back to Buck Creek Buck and Craedocs Jill. He also has Shoenuff Mary Jo on the bottom side. He is a 09 Walker that Allen Stonecipher bought from James Baskins as a two year old. It seems that James has had his hand on another top winning hound in this Final Four. In that time since buying him Eric said that he and Allen have done a lot with Son in those two years.

Eric shared their successes even though he said that Son does not do a lot of competition hunting. Eric said that they got to this point by winning the Dixie Jamboree. After this the next big PKC event for them is to have Eric hunt Son in the Nationals. Since they placed Son third in the Oklahoma State Race they will also hunt him in that State Hunt. Eric said that they do not run up and down the road with him. They hunt him about four nights a week around the house to keep him tuned up.

Keeping him tuned up but not run down was a key factor that Eric felt added to the success that he and Son have had so far on their second trip to the Isle of Capri Casino. Eric stated that he felt last year he hunted Son hard trying to prepare for that first Truck Hunt but he felt ran him down by doing so. This year Eric just kept Son tuned up. Eric said that it also helps when you handle a good dog and they have a lot of heart and drive. Eric said that as a handler though you have to do your part. He stressed that is a team effort and that they are there to win like everyone else. Eric said that all the dogs got here because they tree coons. He also felt lucky breaks help out. He said that the Final Four are the dog that all the stars were aligned for and the dogs did what they needed to do to get here.

Eric shared how he made it to this last and all important round. The Early Round found Stoneys Swamp Rats Son getting the advantage of drawing a three dog cast with Great Miami Rocks owned by Allen and Allen and handled by James Tirey along with Hard Times Annie owned by Mid South Kennel and handled by Ty Nelson. Rocks and Rats Son tied with 150 plus points but Rats Son won the tiebreaker. Eric talked about how the hunt worked out for him and Son. He said that he two little females could never get out of a ten to twenty acre area. They treed a coon and Son split with a coon. The second tree was a den for Son. Then one of the other dogs had a den and that was about it. Eric said when they were walking he had 175 plus points but on the way to one of the other dogs he struck Son in for 25 points but the judge did not hear him open again. Eric said that was his fault for not stopping when he heard him and letting the judge know. He stated that it was a handler mistake that cost him those 25 points.

Eric would not make a handler mistake twice though in the Late Round. In that cast, Eric and Son drew Slow Talking Buzz’s Lynch owned by Cox/Sanders and being handled by Ryan Sanders along with Wheres Wally owned and handled by Chris Chapman and lastly Full Throttle Jiggs owned by Olivia and Stivers with Robert Stivers handling. Rats Son walked away from that cast with 400 plus points. The closest dog to him was Jiggs with 175 plus points. Eric shared how that cast went. He said that before they turned the dogs loose they were striking off the leash. They started striking in within 40 seconds of releasing them. Son treed to the left. When he went to him he had a coon. Their dogs treed and they had a coon too. He stated that after that it was self-explanatory. There were a lot of coons where the cast was hunting. Every time he struck and treed Son he had a coon. He had no minus. He said that Jiggs had a chance to catch them when they were leash locked for a while. Jiggs then got struck and treed back in for 100 and 100 but it was a circle tree. After the hunt was over Eric walked into Son and he had another one on the outside.

Eric has never hunted against any of the dogs in this Final Four. He said that he is just going in blindfolded with guns blazing. He feels that Sons strength in this last cast is his heart and drive. He knows that Son feels good unlike last year. James says that he hopes Son does what he does best and hopefully they will get a lucky break.

James said that he told Allen and everyone back home that the truck is coming home to Oklahoma. He also said that Allen had to stay back and tend to cattle so he came down here with his wife Heidi and their seven month old daughter Paris. He hopes Heidi will be helping him drive another truck home.

We are about to find out if Erics lessons learned last year will pay off and if he will find himself one of the luckiest coon hunters in PKC by only being in two truck hunts back to back and finding himself in the Final Four of each of them!

Eli Stone
Owned by James Baskin
Handled by Jeremy Qualls

Image

This years Final Four of the Senior Show Down is quite an accomplishment for long time PKC member and supporter James Baskin. Having sold two of the tree hounds in it and being the owner of Eli Stone one might say that the odds of James coming away from this round at the casino feeling like a winner are pretty high. However it is with Eli Stone and Jeremy Qualls that the real feeling of winning will hit home for James Baskin.

Eli Stone is a 08 model Walker out of Skuna River Bark and a Rat Attack female. He did not enter the scene under this name though. It was actually James Love who put the name Eli Stone on him when the Walker was owned by Rick Vogel and John Strickland. James Love had gone to try a young dog by the name of Snoop Dog that Jason Will had bred. James liked the dog but future owner Rick Vogel said that if they were going to hunt it than that name had to go. After watching a detective show with a main character named Eli Stone, Snoop Dog no longer existed. James went to work on training the young hound now named Eli Stone.

Eli Stone has had quite the ownership change over in his lifetime and it was from Terry Bush in Georgia that James Baskin bought Eli Stone. James had gone to Jacob Edmonsons house. James Love told him about Eli Stone. James Baskin had hunted with Steve Yant and Eli Stone at the wildlife refuge near James house so James already knew Eli Stone was a good dog. Jacob Tea Cup Edmonson got James Terrys number and James Baskin ended up buying him.

Then James took Eli Stone to the Super Stakes two years ago. He led his first cast and during a time out he called Gary Elliot who had been after him to sell Eli Stone. James told Gary that if he wanted to buy Eli Stone then he better tell him right then. Gary bought him and James went on to win both of his rounds that night. He and Gary waited for Friday to come around and then James got him in again with nine single coons on that third round. James and Eli Stone ended up winning third. Gary Elliot took Eli Stone home but then Bob Dudley found out about him. Bob ended up asking Gary what he would take for the hound and Bob bought him. James and Bob are good friends and have done many dealings together. Down the line James wound up doing a deal with Bob on the Roxanne gyp that James bought from Ryan Crowson. That was when he wound up with Eli Stone back.

Eli Stone had not been hunted for a little while, but James said that he and Eli Stone hunt good together and it only took him about two weeks to have Eli Stone back to the dog he was the first time he had him. Then James and Ben Jones who is from the same town as James started hunting five and six weeks ago until the early morning hours even in the icy cold weather several nights to get Eli Stone ready for this Senior Show Down.

Jeremy Qualls has hunted for James on and off for fifteen years now and has hunted with Eli Stone both of the times that James owned him. James wanted Jeremy to handle for him at this event so Jeremy started going with James and Ben to get to know him. Having Eli Stones style fresh on his mind, Jeremy did well in his first two rounds.

In the Early Round Jeremy and Eli Stone drew out against Handsome Little Demaon owned by Lively Newsome and Reeves being handled by John Lively along with Cutrights Mr Gibb owned by Caleb Cutright being handled by Matt McCallister and lastly Nowheres Sun owned by Marshall and Carvill being handled by Nickey Hale. Eli Stone won the cast with 275 points. Jeremy said that he struck Eli in for 50 and 100 points on the first coon. Eli was by himself. When Jeremy cut him loose again Eli struck back in for 25 points and he had another coon. Jeremy said that nothing ever backed him and Eli Stone was by himself every time.

In the Late Round Jeremy and Eli Stone drew out against Sue owned by Hanawalt and Messersmith being handled by Brad Messersmith along with Rf Big Creek Phlirt owned by Rodney Finger and being handled by Stan Ailshie and lastly Wipeout Stylish Gold owned by Wilbanks and Young and being handled by Clay Young. Eli Stones 175 plus points put him above Wipeout Stylish Golds 25 plus points and James Baskin found himself connected to another Final Four Winner only this time he was the owner! Jeremy said that on this cast he struck Eli Stone for 75 points and he was deep and alone on a coon. Unfortunately Eli Stone was leash locked for about twenty minutes until they heard the other dogs. They heard Gold and Clay Young struck him and then treed him. Jeremy said that Gold was a little over a mile away and that it took them about 30 minutes to get there. After that there was only about 30 minutes left in the hunt. Eli Stone treed again by himself but the hunt was over. All he got was that one coon.

Jeremy said that he had been on two great casts and had two great judges on the two rounds before this Final Round. This is the biggest Final Four that Jeremy has been in so far. When asked what strengths he felt that Eli Stone would bring to the last cast Jeremy said that Eli Stone will be a dead loner who will get treed by himself and have coons. He said that Eli Stones strength is that he will not back another dog nor will he pull to one.

Jeremy has a little advantage in this cast because he has hunted with Mark and Maggie and the Son dog also. He will at least know what to expect with them. James has a lot of faith in Jeremys handling ability tonight.

Having played a part in three of the four dogs in this Final Four is a huge honor for James Baskin. James said that he is proud. He said that he has no hobbies outside of coon hunting. He said that he hunts every night of his life and loves to buy dogs and work them to either keep or sell. He is also proud that he raised the All Time PKC Money Winner in Rat off of his female Shoenuff Mary Jo who is also in Swamp Rats Sons pedigree. No matter how it turns out this Final Four is one that James Baskin will not forget.

Clovers Stylish Rover
Owned by Stallard/Stallard/Stallard
Handled by Cody Stallard

Image

Last year the Stallards also found themselves hunting in the Final Four of the Senior Showdown when Jeff Stallard and his son Codys dog Hillbilly Deluxe made it to that much desired final round. That started off a very successful year for the Stallards with Hillbilly Deluxe. Jeff found himself handling Hillbilly Deluxe in the Final Three of the 2013 PKC World Championship and though they did not emerge as the victors they did find themselves on the top of PKC standings by cinching the Top Male Race. Now the Stallards are going to see if the third time truly is a charm for this Final Four just a year later. However this time they are mixing it up with dog and handler.

In this Senior Showdown the Stallards had two dogs in. Jeff Stallard handled Hillbilly Deluxe and his son Cody Stallard went on as Rovers handler. This time the son took the lessons learned from home and beat out his father Jeff and Hillbilly Deluxe with this O6 model Walker. In their interviews last year Jeff Stallard bragged about Rover and obviously with good reason.

Rover is out of Stylish Zeke and Stylish Kate. The Stallards got him from Ian and Kevin McCoy a year ago. The Stallards decided to get him all because of his coloring. Their saying is If it aint white then it aint right. Cody said his dad and Larry Danner both say that he reminds them a lot of Jeffs old dog Lefty. Cody said Rover is just an old bawl mouth tree dog that does not say a lot on the ground. When asked the Stallards will tell you that Rover is just another of one of their farm dogs. These farm dogs to them may not be as refined appearing as some of the hounds in this competition but they definitely get the job done.

The Early Round found Cody and Rover up against Briar Creek Chaser owned by Manuel Mowery and being handled by Travis Sneed along with Hats Creeks Stylish Bang owned and handled by Wesley Hamby and lastly Wipeout Bones being owned by Morgan and Goings and being handled by Benjie Morgan. The only other dog to have plus points in that cast was Stylish Bang with 25 plus points but Rover toppled that score with his 150 plus points. He may have only made one tree but that tree held a coon. As Cody said having those coons helps you. This took Cody and Rover into the next round.

In that Late Round Cody and Rover drew W CH Smokin Hotspot owned by Jarrod Robertson and being handled by Bobby Burden along with North Bottom Jackie owned by Curt Hummert and being handled by his son Mitch Hummert and lastly Nighttime Tree Bender owned by Hall and Chenoweth and being handled by Jared Hall. This was a cast of top youth handlers accompanied by the 2013 PKC World Champion that the Stallards found themselves going up against back in November at the PKC World Championship Final Four. Cody said that the handlers all had a good time hunting against each other but the dogs just looked common and did not perform to their fullest. Rover would walk away from this cast though as the only hound with plus points and those 50 plus points would put Cody Stallard in the Final Four of the Truck Hunt.

When asked what strength Rover would bring to this last battle for the truck Cody replied that he just stays out of trouble. He said that you may hear him walking around one minute and then the next minute you will hear him in there treed.

If they win the truck Cody jokingly said that he may do some donuts in the parking lot of the casino before he drives it home. Then on a more serious note Cody said that if he wins the truck he will be keeping it. This would be a nice gift for a 16 year old PKC Youth Handler! However he is not the only Stallard son with his eyes on the road ahead. Younger son Casey Stallard is looking forward to next month when the Stallards travel back to Lula Mississippi for the Pup Shoot Out with Caseys hound Image. Casey is hoping that his older brother wins it tonight and next month he will get his own set of keys.
