I thought God said that He is no respecter a person. According to the Book we are ALL going to be judged by IT. Sin is sin. Wrong is wrong. Right is right. If the Book says something is sin is it sin for one of us and not sin for another? I have never found in the Bible yet were it says that a scripture may mean something to someone and mean something totally different to someone else. I have been told that a lot in my life but usually by someone that will live by alot of scriptures but overlook some of them like they ain't even in there or they mean something totally different to them because it doesn't fit what their lifestyle or what they are doing. This has got me to thinking about a lot of things in my life.. Is COMPETITION hunting really a sin? Is church softball, baseball, basketball, etc. TOURNAMENTS really a sin? Just because we are raised playing these things and BELIEVING that they are ok does it really mean they are ok? What I BELIEVE and what you BELIEVE don't amount to a hill of beans. And our OPINIONS don't matter? GOD is either for it or against it.

This is another thing. HE said HE would have no other gods before ME(HIM). Coon hunting for a pleasure hunter can be a god to him and be a sin if he has hunting before GOD. This is a different sinerio I know. This subject on other gods before ME is the only place you will find that something is sin for one and not a sin for another but actually this sin is basically just putting GOD second to last and pleasure hunting first instead of putting GOD first and pleasure hunting next.

The issue to start with was is COMPETITION hunting(trophies, money, or no money, doesn't really matter when you are competing). Is it really wrong? Is GOD pleased with COMPETITION hunting?

Don't get me wrong, I like COMPETITION hunting. But this has really got me thinking. I know way too much about the Bible and what GOD expects of us to be a good steward to believe that COMPETITION hunting is ok. I may have to do some things different after really sitting down and measuring this up to Gods measuring stick. HIS WORD.

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His Word changeth not. If they would have had COMPETITION coon hunting in the Bible days would Jesus been for it or against it? Something we should think about if we are really sincere about living for God and striving after righteousness. I know I am thinking on this.

Is God really for or against organized(COMPETITION) sports. HE is either for it or against it. There is no middle ground with God. I know the times we are born in and are living in. We are brought up to believe that competing is ok but is it? If you think so then is it in the Bible somewhere in any way that says its ok? Is it in the Bible somewhere that it(COMPETING) is not ok? I belive the answer is in there.

Remember I am a COMPETITION hunter but I am trying to be HONEST here with you, myself, and GOD. Im not even looking at it from a gambling or root of all evil(money) stand point. Im looking at it as COMPETITION.

Article on competition hunting and gambling

Postby James Guy » Fri Dec 03, 2010 3:35 pm

You can also find this article at: http://redtidekennels.files.wordpress.c ... ling1.docx

Here are some things to consider. Bear with me (it is a long article) and I will explain how we might apply them to the coon hunting / gambling issue.

WHAT MAKES SOMETHING WRONG?
There are at least three ways something may be wrong (or right for that matter). (1) God says it is. That’s good enough isn’t it. (2) It is against God’s principles He set for us, or violates the principles of righteousness. (3) It violates our conscience. That is, if we believe it is wrong, that it is wrong for us to do it.

The first one is obvious. If God says something is wrong, it is. We may try to find excuses for doing it, or try to “re-interpret” the Bible to fit what we WISH God said. For example, sexual immorality is a sin (I Corinthians 6:9). The difficult part sometimes comes when we do have to determine (apply) what is sexual immorality. Usually, this means we are going to try to find a way NOT to obey God, but there are circumstances where something may not be a sin even though it may be commonly taught that it is. For example, Jesus dealt with the Pharisees often and many of His conversations were telling THEM they were wrong for telling other people something was right or wrong that God did not say. In other words, they were making the rules FROM what God did say (see Matthew 15 – especially vs. 9).

The second one is a little more difficult because it requires more of our “interpretation” and “application” of something. The matter really is of the heart more than specific rules in that if we are trying to please God, we will do something, or not do something, based on what He wants. But, we still have to figure out what He wants. For example, the Bible does not tell us it is a sin to say “Sh—“ (cuss word). Some have said it is wrong to say “shoot” because it is a substitute for that word. These are rules man makes. But, God DID give us principles such as “letting your speech be seasoned with salt” and setting a good example for others, etc. There is also the principle that I’ll discuss next that must be considered. So, there is no command against saying a particular word, but certain godly principles may lead us to determine that it is.

The third thing that would make something wrong is because we believe it is wrong but do it anyway. This one is often difficult to grasp and apply. Especially since we tend to try to force others to believe what we do. Using the above example, if I think saying a particular word is wrong, I expect ever other Christian to believe that as well. This makes us the standard of righteousness and not God. No preacher, church, or anybody else has to right to decide for everybody else what is right or wrong in matters of opinion or conscience. That is what this really is. Some would suggest that this should not be a standard for right or wrong, but the Bible itself does teach us this. For example, Romans 14 (see especially verses 1-10. In this case, Paul uses the example of some who may believe it is wrong to eat meat, while others believe it is alright. He also uses the example of some who believe they should celebrate special days, while others may believe differently. The TRUTH is that it was NOT wrong to eat meat, nor to celebrate special days. But, if you did it believing it was wrong (not of faith), then you are being rebellious and violating your conscience in a way that says, “I don’t care if God thinks it is wrong, I’m going to do it anyway.” Another example is in I Corinthians 8:1-13. Here, the principle is much more clear. Some believed it was wrong to eat meat that was sacrificed to idols. Others just see it as meat. Paul clearly says that it was NOT wrong to eat the meat because it is just meat, and the idols are not real gods anyway (see verse 4 and following). He goes on to say what WOULD make it a sin is to do it in the presence of a Christian who did think it was wrong, and so influence him to eat something he thought was wrong. In this case, it was not wrong for EITHER of them to eat the meat, but it was wrong for the “weaker brother” to eat the meat because he THOUGHT it was wrong.

HOW DOES THIS APPLY TO COON HUNTING?
There are also at least three questions that must be answered concerning if competition hunting where money is involved is a gambling and/or a sin. (1) Is gambling a sin? (2) Is competition hunting gambling? (3) Is there something that could make competition hunting wrong for me, even if it is not wrong itself?

First, there is no scripture that says gambling is wrong. Many preachers and churches have made hard and fast rules against it and told people it is wrong PERIOD! But, the truth is, God does not say that it is wrong. In fact, Judas’s replacement was chosen by “drawing lots” (not for money, and led by God, but still a type of gambling). However, we must apply the other principles where it may be wrong. Does it violate your conscience, but you do it anyway? Are there other principles that may be involved that would make it wrong? For example, I know some who go to the casinos and say they do it just for fun in the same way they would go to the movies. The fact that they may be able to win some money makes it more fun for them. Who am I to say they are not just doing it for fun? But, if they do it from a heart of greed, pride, selfishness, etc. then it would make it wrong. If they believe it is wrong, but do it anyway, that violates the passages discussed above. Then, we could not say gambling itself was wrong, but why and how we practiced it was wrong. Another example of this is giving to the poor. We would not say giving the poor is a bad thing. In fact, we would say it is good. But, Jesus taught to do it for your own glory WAS wrong (Matthew 6:1-2). The fact that somebody does it in a wrong way does not make the act wrong. It is only wrong for that person to do it in the wrong way. The same is true of hunting. We know God never says, “Thou shalt not competition hunt for prize money.” You won’t find that anywhere in the Bible. But, if we do it in a way that is for greed, ungodly pride, cheating, etc. then the WAY we do it or the REASON we do it would be wrong. There is nothing wrong with wanting to win a competition. But, if you cheat to win, or tear other people down when you win, those violate other principles. It is not a specific scripture that makes gambling, hunting, or giving a sin. But, there may be PRINCIPLES that would make pretty much anything a sin done in the wrong way or for the wrong reasons.

Second, is the often asked question as to whether or not competition hunting for money is gambling. The same has been asked for many years about other things such as investing in the stock market. If we decide that gambling itself is not wrong (except when violating some principle), then this question does not even matter. If it is not wrong to gamble, then it does not matter if competition hunting is gambling or not. But, we must ask the question because some do believe gambling is wrong (even if it is because of other principles). The answer depends on how you define gambling. Again, the Bible does not define it for us, and does not say it is right or wrong. So, we would have to ask, “WHAT is gambling and WHY is gambling wrong” (if we believe it is). Then we have to ask, “Is competition hunting for prizes or money wrong for the same reasons?” There are some differences in the two though. What we typically call gambling involves MORE chance, while competition hunting (as well as sports and other things) involves more EARNING / PARTICIPATING in the winning. That said, there is some strategy to gambling, and there is some chance to hunting (the chance you draw a cast with worse dogs or handlers than you for example). The same is true of investing in the stock market. You have to strategically choose your investments and manage them wisely, but there is also the uncontrollable chance they will lose money. Of course, you “take a chance” when you buy a car….you don’t know if it will break down or not. Life is full of “chance” decisions and actions. That does not make them wrong. I do not see competition (even for prizes, trophies, or money) as the same as gambling. The reason is they are done differently, for different reasons, with a different purpose, and because games of chance and games of competition are different in their nature. But, if you do believe it is wrong, then you should not do it (based on the principles of conscience) unless and until you learn that it is not. Again, this is the same principle as the eating meat sacrificed to idols.

The third question is probably the most important one in our sport though. Let us assume that we decide that gambling is not wrong, or that at least competition hunting is not gambling and is, therefore, not wrong. We have all seen things happen in the woods that ARE wrong. Does that make the hunt wrong? No. It makes those actions wrong. Just as giving to the poor for the wrong reasons does not make giving wrong. The pride of giving for the wrong reason IS still wrong. That does not mean we should not give. It means we must be careful of our own heart and actions that we give RIGHT. In hunting, we must be very careful not to do something that is right (or o.k.) in a way that we do wrong things while doing it. If competition hunting (even for prizes) is not wrong, but we cheat somebody else to get the prize, then it is the CHEATING, not the hunting, that is wrong. If we develop a greedy heart so that we take advantage of others, or just think pridefully of ourselves, then the hunting is not wrong. It is our own greed and pride that is wrong. If we have a problem with that temptation that we cannot overcome, then we may need to decide NOT to competition hunt for money. At least not until we can overcome that temptation. We would not want to do something that would cause us to sin.

THE BOTTOM LINE
What I suggest is that more Christians participate in competition hunting and set GODLY EXAMPLES in doing so. If you do believe the “prize” part of it is wrong, then give your winnings to the rest of the cast or donate it to charity. I have hunted with people that I wanted to leave in the woods (if you know what I mean). They may cheat, or just be mean spirited. I have also seen people throw a hunt, not for political / buddy reasons or to cheat, but out of kindness to bless someone else. Consider what Paul, Peter, and Jesus said about not repaying evil for evil, but repay evil with good (Romans 12:14-21; I Peter 3:9; Luke 6:27-36). There are so many ways that we, as Christians, can do GOOD in competition hunting. We can be the shining light and example of how it should be done. That will mean you will lose some hunts, often to those who do wrong. But, you may win more than a hunt in the long run. You can often be a good example when you do win. Demonstrate kindness to those who did not win, and thankfulness to God for the win. We may even win a few hunts and learn ourselves to be thankful to God for them. You may even win that sinner to Christ, or help a misguided Christian be reminded of what matters and how he should act. In ALL we do, give glory to God (Colossians 3:17), and that can make what could be a bad thing into a good thing.

So, is competition hunting, even for prizes or money, a sin? “Let each be fully convinced in his own mind” (Romans 14:5). But, do not let your own feelings, wishes, or preferences decide for you. Neither let preachers, well-meaning Christian hunters, nor any human beings decide for you. Rather, consider what God says (and does not say for that matter), and ask Him to lead you. And if you decide that it is alright to do it, do it in a way that glorifies God. I hope to see you in the woods….

Jerrod, I think that is one of the most important attitudes to have. Though, if you read the article I posted, you can see that I do not believe it is wrong to comp. hunt (unless you do it for wrong reasons and in wrong ways), I do think that we should always be willing to learn, grow, and change. That sometimes does mean giving up something we like to do. It could also mean feeling good about something we thought might be wrong.

I shared the example of my mother who was taught that playing cards was a sin. Even when she learned it wasn't, it was hard for her not to feel guilty about it. Now, she can play it with no problem, but man's rules made her feel guilty, not God's conviction. Sometimes the opposite is true when we may be doing something wrong, but have come to believe it was right. It does not change that it is wrong does it? Even though we do have to ask IF something is right or wrong and WHY or WHY NOT. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference, but it does begin with a willing heart to be taught.

I appreciate your willingness to obey God no matter what. That is what He asks of us as we submit to Him.

Well I think if you are in this to gamble and make money you are going broke most the time. Most people could care less for the money just give the the win slip. They just take the money to help on the gas.I know of some churchs that have raffles for pies and other thing still a gamble. Would you buy a raffle ticket to help a child with cancer; still gambling. Its all an opinion to me of how you look at it. Are you sittting at a table taking a mans last dollar or is it going to a good cause or are you just having fun.
Mr. James I really like your artical well explained and exactly the way I feel. We often go by man made runs that are twisted for the text of the bible. Thanks for making it long I liked it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not saying COMPETITION hunting is gambling. I agree with everything said that it isn't gambling. I also agree that if it is misused there are all kinds of sins that a man can do right in the middle of it. Competing and gambling are two different things. And just because people do a lil gambling for pleasure doesn't make gambling ok. Who draws the line?? Does the individual gambling know when to draw the line?? A person can EASILY deceive his own self and be damned.

My question is does GOD like COMPETING? HE either likes it or he doesn't.

P.S. Is God ok with a bar also??? Because if a man can gamble a lil for fun and its ok then surely everyone can go to the bars and participate a lil at the bar and be ok as long as they are just doing it for pleasure.

From looking in the bible I cant find anything about gambling being wrong.
This is what I have found
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evilwhich while some coveted afterthey have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with mant sorrows

Proverbs 13:11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be deminished But wealth gathered by labor shall increase

Still not convinced yet because in COMPETING there is PRIDE and BOASTING in EVERY MAN that COMPETES. If not then why would a man COMPETE to start with. He may go to a hunt just as pleasure to start with but COMPETITION gets ahold of our PRIDE.. And if we win we will BRAG on ole High Ball because he put a spanking on them ole buiscit eaters last weekend. BOASTING, BRAGGING, and PRIDE comes with competition. If anyone says it don't I would wonder if they would HONESTLY ask themselves if they have ever won any hunts and HONESTLY with themselves and GOD ask if they have never BRAGGED or BOASTED(PRIDE) about what win they won. It may even be a very small hunt but it happens. It is in the carnal mans nature to do this. We are to walk in the spirit. How can I walk in the spirit in a bar with out sinning. I wont walk in the spirit long there. How can I walk in the spirit at any type of COMPETITION that I am participating in? I wont do it long before PRIDE, BOASTING, BRAGGING, ETC. Will show up in my spirit. These are sins according to the BIBLE. If we are led by the SPIRIT the SPIRIT OF GOD will keep us away from these things and places.
Now, there is also JEALOUSY that will rise up in ALL of us. That is another sin that will come with COMPETITION. If we COMPETE these things are SURE to rise up in us. Maybe not every day but a lot of days. If we keep ourselves from COMPETING that is one provision for the flesh we have kept it from. These are sins that are equal to MURDER in the book. Wouldn't you thing we would want to try and stay as far away from sin as we could or just ride that fence and hope we don't fall on the other side?? Think about it.
These SINS are sure to take place in EVERY MAN OR WOMEN in COMPETITION.

The Bible does not tell us if God is for or against competition, so we cannot answer that question in that way - we have to ask if doing it, or if how we do it, violates some principle.

Does God care if we compete or not? As we best we can determine, that answer would be no.
Does God care if we compete with pride, dishonesty, etc.? That answer is yes.

Pride, however, does not mean you are proud to have won, or thankful to have a good dog, etc. It means you puff yourself up against others and put your trust and thankfulness in yourself. Instead of thanking God for your win, and being thankful He gave you a good dog, a good night, a good skill in calling your dog, etc. we gloat and puff ourselves up because WE are great because of the win. When that happens, it is not competing that is the sin, but the pride you exhibit because of it that is the sin. That kind of pride is ALWAYS sin.

Me personally, I do not think this way when I win something. If I do, then I should realize that and repent of it.
Because I may be tempted to do these things does not mean I don't compete, unless I realize that I do not have the strength to overcome any temptation there. In that case I may decide I don't need to do it. It does not mean it is wrong. It just means that I am trying to avoid that temptation. Somebody else may not be tempted in that same way so it is not a problem for them to compete. It is not the competition that is wrong, but what I do with it that can be. I may be tempted to lust after women, but that does not mean it would be a sin to go out in public where I might see some. It means I learn to recognize my stuggle and, if I have trouble overcoming it, I do try to avoid the temptation. I may stay out of Hooters, or learn ways to be more careful about what I put in my mind. I have to learn my own struggles and do what I personally need to do to not practice sin in my life. For some, that may mean they do not need to compete. Or, it may mean they need to constantly pray and remind themselves not to use the competition in a sinful way.

Bottom line is that, as Jerrod and other have noted, if something is wrong, then it is wrong. But, the answer to our question is that competing is NOT wrong. But, what I DO with competing is wrong if what I do with it is wrong. Not that something is wrong for one, but not another. But how I may USE that activity may be wrong.
In other words, sinful pride is a sin for EVERYONE. But, one may be tempted to have pride at a coonhunt. Another person may be tempted to have pride because they have a nice house and look down on others who do not (so they may need to live in a more modest house). Often, people buy too much to puff themselves up with pride - they may need to sell that (or even give some away) and do differently. I have coached youth baseball for years. I know some coaches who do it for pride, to puff themselves up, and glorify themselves when THE KIDS win. I have also known coaches who have decided NOT to coach anymore because they realized it was too much of a temptation for them to do that. I have known a couple who took a break from it for a season or two for the same reason, then came back with a better perspective. So, there are some people who do NOT need to competition hunt, or maybe for a while until they can get their priorities right. But, that does not make the competition wrong. It makes what they would do with it wrong so they avoid that to please God.
Does that make sense?

Having said all that, there are a few passage in the Bible about competing. They do not say it is right or wrong, but are used as an illustration in a way that suggested God was not opposed to competition.
For example:

II Timothy 4:5 "Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules."

He is using that as an illustration of how if we live for God, we receive a reward. The example of a competition is just an illustration of competing with a goal in mind to receive a reward. If God thought competing was sinful, He would not have used the illustration in such a good way. He wouldn't have used an illustration such as, "if you are going to beat somebody up, be sure to beat them up bad" to illustrate how we should live for good would He?

I think the two of the best scriptures that should be the GUIDING scriptures for those who competition hunt (or anything else for that matter) are:
Colossians 3:17 "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
and
Matthew 5:16 "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."If we do this, we can take what COULD be used as a bad thing, and use it as a GOOD thing.

If I gain the whole world and loose my soul what have I profited? If I save the world and loose my soul what have I profited? I can be a witness on a cast I know. But with me being on that cast the sins I mentioned about are sure to come. James, you are right, we have a choice not to let these things rise up but in COMPETITION they are SURE to rise up. It is the nature of this old flesh to sin. We are to walk in the spirit. It is impossible to please GOD walking in the flesh. They might not rise up in a man every cast but they are sure to come when the right situations present themselves. He said with every temptation he made a way to escape. The escape route for these sins might just be when you are thinking about going to a COMPETITION hunt and there is a decision to make. Rather than when you get done wrong on a cast and then you have the decision then to make on how to handle it. Or rather when you have the choice to circle or minus your last tree and you vote circle so you can win but the tree is obviously slick. When in COMPETITION there are MANY decisions of rather or rather not to sin to make. They will be there.

Back to the other subject. I can prop a chair up in my local bar and start witnessing and probably convert someone before it is over with. But the seeds planted while I am there are sure to grow and sure to spring up, whether while I am there or may be a mile down the road. More than likely it will where the action is taking place.

Its just like I said, if we are riding the fence of sin I think GOD would want us to get off the fence and move toward his side a little more than just continue to ride it.

If my motive is truely to be a light and a witness I will try and spend some time with the person that I have a burden for. I do believe that witnessing everywhere we go is GODS will but everywhere WE WANT to go and PARTICIPATE in isn't where where He would want us to be due to the sins that come with it.

Going to a whore house isn't a sin. I can be a witness there. But would GOD be pleased that I go there?

Riding the fence isn't where HE wants us. COMPETING is riding the fence. It is no way any man will do much competing and the sins I mentioned not happen in his or her mind and heart. The reason I say it is riding the fence is because some of them sins are SURE to rise up in a man. Maybe not losing about a slick tree but the other sins I had mentioned will happen. Maybe they wont happen the first couple of times but if you keep rubbing two sticks together you are sure to start a fire.

I would like to add that I am not against anyone on here, I am for everyone one here and that James is my friend. This is just an interesting subject to me and should be an interesting one to all of us.

And I think that GOD would probably be more pleased if we were all pleasure hunters than COMPETITION hunters. Wouldn't you think?

I know everyone is different but we are all the same when we are born and we are all the same when we die. We also will be judged as no respecter a persons. ( all the same)

I, for one, wish that competition hunting was the only thing I will have to answer for when my day of judgement comes. If it were the worst sin I have committed, I think I'd be a lot better off...
