~ Advantages of breeding and hunting PKC Super Stakes Pups ~

Postby Jerry Moll » Fri Nov 18, 2011 11:58 am

Last weekend I was at my local club for a Coonhunt. We were all swapping Coonhunting stories and talking about the latest and greatest pup coming on in our area. The subject of PKC Super Stakes pups came up and I was more than a little surprised with some of the common misconceptions about the program. The most surprising statement from one hunter was, “I think the PKC Super Stakes is a good program, but it’s just too much hassle for the privilege of hunting in just two hunts in the dog’s lifetime”? Say what?

Maybe we have not done a good job of getting the word out, but the PKC Super Stakes Program is far more, it is a huge multifaceted program with something for just about everyone to enjoy. Serious Coonhunters like those of you reading this have many things in common; you are very passionate about producing superior coonhounds, you recognize and appreciate these outstanding coonhounds when you see them. You take pride in the accomplishments that your sires and dams have achieved in the woods and in the breeding pen and you reach much of your satisfaction when you see the fruits of your labor, their offspring, winning across the country.

Anyone who has been breeding coonhounds for any length of time knows full well that success relies on getting your pups in the right hands. The best bred pups in the world cannot reach their inherited potential if not cared for and hunted properly. Furthermore, the key to your sire or dam being recognized as a top reproducer is your winning pups getting their full exposure on the coonhound websites and monthly magazines.

There is no segment of the coonhound world where there is a higher demand for outstanding pups than from those trainers and hunters regularly participating in the PKC Super Stakes Program. These trainers and hunters have come to recognize that a return on their investment of time, money and reputation is much more likely with a PKC Super Stakes Pup. Don’t you want pups from your sire and dams to have the very best opportunity in reaching their full potential in ability and notoriety? What would be more satisfying than seeing a pup from your next highly successful cross on the front cover of Prohound and American Cooner?

Did you know that in the average year, the PKC Super Stakes Program pays out in excess of $500,000 to pup owners, sire owners and dam owners? It is very hard to believe that there are hunters, such as the one mentioned above, that have not studied the PKC Super Stakes Program and still believe that it’s all about one or two hunts each year. As you know, nothing could be further from the truth. The PKC Super Stakes Program is a far reaching inclusive program that hunters can compete in at their local coon club six nights per week or at the National Level elimination hunts for extremely large purses.

Here is a list of the PKC Super Stakes Program Benefits that come to mind:
•You may enroll your sire for six months, one year or per litter
•Sire Owners are entitled to 10% of pup earnings in Super Stakes and Pup Shoot-Out
•Sire Owners are entitled to compete for and earn Sire of the Year awards
•Dam Owners are entitled to 10% of pup earnings in Super Stakes and Pup Shoot-Out
•Dam Owners are entitled to compete for and earn Breeder of the Year awards
•Your sire and contact information is advertised monthly free of charge in PROHOUND magazine
•All Super Stakes litters along with the breeder’s contact information advertised monthly free of charge in PROHOUND magazine

Your Super Stake offspring may compete in the following PKC events:
•Freshman Baby Stakes Championship (under one year of age)
•Sophomore Super Stakes Championship (between one and two years of age)
•Junior Super Stakes Championship (between two and three years of age)
•Senior Super Stakes Championship (between three and four years of age)
•Pup Shoot-Out – Truck Hunt (qualify between one and four years of age)
•Pup Derbies at large Open Events (between one and three years of age)
•Pup Casts at all other Open Events (between one and three years of age)
•Breeders Showcase, broken down by all age groups (between one and four years of age)

These are a few of the PKC Super Stakes Program advantages that I could think of. Can you think of any others? If so, please post.
Prepare yourself and your hound. Hunt the dog, read the Blue Book, and your Good Book!

Do owners of the Sire and Dam still get a percentage of their pups winnings each year?

Sire owners and Breeders get 10% directly from in the Super Stakes Championship winners and then again, at the end of the litter's Super Stakes eligibility, the Top Sires and Breeders are paid as follows.

AWARDS will be disbursed as follows: See page 27 Blue Book.
 $500 will be awarded to the Sire Owner of the leading sire of each
recognized breed, excluding the leading breed, whose pups have
the highest total of accumulated earnings from birth until March
31st prior to their Senior Super Stakes Championship, provided
there was a minimum of six (6) sires of the respective breed
enrolled in the Super Stakes Sire Program for the respective period.
The remaining awards will be distributed as follows:
 1st Place ........50% of the Fund Balance up to a maximum of $8,000
 2nd Place ......25% of the Fund Balance up to a maximum of $5,500
 3rd Place........15% of the Fund Balance up to a maximum of $3,700

Prepare yourself and your hound. Hunt the dog, read the Blue Book, and your Good Book!
