Guidelines – Moving Dogs Up On Split Trees

Postby Jerry Moll » Fri Sep 17, 2010 10:03 am

The subject of when and when not to move dogs up on split trees when dog(s) have moved (received minus) has been the point of much discussion over the last few years and yet there is still a great deal of confusion surrounding this issue. The possibilities of slightly different variations of these split trees/dog(s) moving scenarios are almost endless. Rather than answer any of these specific scenarios almost certain to spawn many more, here are a few guidelines to help judges, handlers and panels apply the rules consistently.

The challenge comes into play when the judge finds some dogs split treed and some trailing that have been declared treed. It is very hard to determine which dogs deserve what tree points after the fact.

In order to make the proper determination the judge needs to know:
A; at what time(s) were dog(s) declared treed behind the first, second and third dogs
B; at what point did the judge determine dog(s) and which dog(s) were split on separate trees
C; at what point did the judge determine dog(s) were off tree and deserving minused

As a general rule if items A, B and C are not known before any dog(s) are handled, then dog(s) must remain scored as originally recorded by the judge. If however, items A, B and C are fully known going in, then adjustments may be made and recorded tree points for dog(s) moved up in accordance with PKC rules.

**Please note the following judging guidelines.

*Judge should ALWAYS announce dog(s) name, points received AND the amount of elapsed time on a tree when dog(s) are declared treed.

*Tree points for dog(s) should ALWAYS be re-recorded as split (separate) trees just as soon as dog(s) are determined to be split by judge.

*Tree points for dog(s) should ALWAYS be minused just as soon as dog(s) are determined to be "off tree" by judge.

Here are a couple of examples:

Scenario #1
Dogs A, B, C and D are all struck and treed deep in the country just prior to the hunt expiring. Dog A was treed for 100 with dogs B, C and D being treed in the last 30 seconds of the five minutes for 25 each. The hunt expires while walking toward the dogs. When they arrive in the area of the dogs, A is off trailing and dogs B, C and D are all split treed from one another. In this case dog A is minused 100 tree points and dogs B, C and D remain at 25 tree points each as they were originally called. The judge announces this to the cast members BEFORE trees are scored.

Scenario #2 (similar to #1)
Dogs A, B, C and D are all struck and treed deep in the country just prior to the hunt expiring. Dog A was treed for 100 with dogs B, C and D being treed in the last 30 seconds of the five minutes for 25 each. As they start walking it becomes obvious to the judge and cast members that dogs B, C and D are way right handed of dog A. At this point the judge re-records dogs B, C and D 100, 75 and 50 tree points respectively. The hunt expires while walking toward the dogs. After scoring dog A they arrive in the area of dogs B, C and D and find all split treed from one another. In this case dog A remains at 100 tree points, dog B remains at 100 tree points and dogs C and D move up to 100 tree points each. The judge announces this to the cast members BEFORE trees are scored.
